Latina, a true hidden gem of Italy! Here, unspoiled nature combines with rich history, creating an unforgettable experience. Discover breathtaking landscapes, from lush green hills to spectacular coastline.
For history enthusiasts, ancient Roman ruins and medieval villages await you. Coastal cities like Sabaudia and San Felice Circeo offer golden sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters.
If you love Italian cuisine, the province of Latina is the perfect place. Taste traditional dishes made with fresh seafood, local olive oil, and products from Lazio.
For nature lovers, the Circeo National Park offers hikes, wildlife, and panoramic views. The Lepini Mountains provide additional adventure opportunities.
The Municipality of Latina also includes the beautiful Pontine Islands, such as Ponza and Ventotene, easily accessible and a must-visit destination for those who love holidays by the sea and in tranquility.
Here is a list of the main attractions/organizations in the Pontine territory:
What to see in the city of Latina
Villa Brando is the ideal luxury vacation home for relaxation amidst lush greenery, just a short distance from Rome, the sea, and Sabaudia.
In particular, the city of Latina stands out for its exceptionally rational architecture, a hallmark of the Fascist era that has remained intact to this day. The most prominent square is undoubtedly Piazza del Popolo, home to the Town Hall with its tower and charming gardens, all worth a visit.
A curiosity that underscores the city's connection to its historical origins is Palazzo M, named in honor of Mussolini. It's a monumental, granite structure that was meant to be part of a larger architectural project that was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II and was intended to involve the entire city.
Another noteworthy attraction is the Piana delle Orme Museum, dedicated primarily to agriculture and land reclamation works that allowed the city of Latina to flourish and rid itself of the marshy, swampy areas typical of the region.
The Sea of Latina
Latina is just a stone's throw away from the sea, easily reachable even by a bike ride. Here are some details about the most beautiful beaches near the city:
Torre Astura
Torre Astura is the jewel of the Roman coastline, a beach where the sea is crystal clear in the shadow of the fascinating fortress that rises amidst the water on a small islet connected to the mainland by a stone walkway. Located 20 minutes from Latina, along the coastline facing Rome, it is situated in a still wild stretch of coastline, accessible only during certain periods of the year due to its inclusion in the military shooting range area. This circumstance limits access to the free beach only during certain weeks and weekends of the summer season, but it also preserves the charm of this stretch of coastline intact.
San Felice Circeo
This small village, part of the larger municipality of Latina, is located in the Pontine region, about 100 km from Rome. It is renowned for its sea and natural park. San Felice Circeo has a rich history, with evidence of Neanderthal habitation dating back 60,000 years ago. Over the centuries, it has been inhabited by the Roman Empire, during the Middle Ages, and in modern times, it was under the protection of the powerful Caetani family.
In addition to its beautiful sea, San Felice Circeo boasts a historic village with charming medieval streets overlooking the sea and the islands. Its main street, Via del Faro, is one of the most picturesque in all of Lazio.
Be sure to explore the coves and numerous caves that offer absolute privacy and crystal-clear waters, made even more fascinating by the characteristic reddish color of the soil. This characteristic gives the place its name: Punta Rossa. Lastly, a visit to the lighthouse is almost obligatory, a true symbol of this municipality where you can eat, relax, sleep, and shop in the reference boutique.
Sabaudia
Nestled among white sand dunes and lush, wild nature thanks to the presence of the Circeo National Park, you'll find Sabaudia. This tourist destination near Rome offers everyone, young and old, the opportunity to spend unforgettable weekends on one of the wildest and most beautiful beaches on the Lazio coast.
For those not solely interested in the sea, nearby attractions include the restored Lucullo Fountain, open to the public, and the Villa of Domitian, which extends to Lake Sabaudia. This lake, along with the Caprolace, Fogliano, and Monaci Lakes, forms one of Italy's most interesting lake systems.
Lastly, the characteristic and noteworthy feature is the watchtower perched on the sea cliff on the Circeo promontory: Torre Paola.
Gaeta and Sperlonga
Two fortresses, two villages perched on the sea, two splendid gems that are part of the Municipality of Latina and attract thousands of tourists to their beaches and coasts every year are Sperlonga and Gaeta.
Sperlonga, in particular, epitomizes Southern Italian hospitality. Sought after by Turks, Romans, and Saracens for the beauty of its coastline, Sperlonga offers a continuous succession of climbs, descents, breathtaking views, and incredible panoramas.
Its strong medieval character is evident in every building, church, and entrance gate (Porta Carrese and Porta Marina being the most prominent), boutiques, and perfectly preserved and polished streets for tourists and visitors.
Be sure to visit the Church of Santa Maria and the National Archaeological Museum of Sperlonga, as well as the harbor to relax and dine in one of the many restaurants directly overlooking the sea.
